How to Set Up and Connect to a VPN on Windows 11

A VPN is a virtual private network, Virtual Private Network, which is a networking technology that helps create a secure network connection when participating in a public network such as the Internet or a private network owned by a service provider. Large corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies use VPN technology to allow remote users to securely connect to their own private network.

How to Install a VPN on Windows 11

1. Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN.

2. In the VPN connections section, click Add VPN to add a new VPN.

3. Open the drop-down menu in the VPN Provider section and select Windows (built-in).

  • VPN provider: The default selection is Windows (built-in).
  • Connection name: It’s the name used to identify the VPN. Just name it whatever you like.
  • Server name or address: This is provided by the VPN company and they might have multiple locations. Just enter one location.
  • VPN type: If you know what exactly your VPN type is, you should specify it to get a faster speed. If not, just leave it as the default Automatic.
  • Type of sign-in info: If it’s a free connection without any username or password, you can leave the rest of the boxes blank. If it has a username and password, just input them in the below boxes. You can also use a smart card.

4. Select Save to save the VPN.

How to use VPN on Windows 11

There are many ways to use a VPN, and the easiest way is to connect from the Quick settings area.

1. Click on the location of the network, sound and battery icons on the Taskbar to open Quick settings.

2. Click the arrow next to the VPN icon to select the VPN you need to connect to. Click Connect.

If you can't access VPN from Quick settings, you can go to Settings > Network & internet > VPN and then click Connect in the VPN section you need to connect to.

How to delete a VPN

1. Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN.

 2. Click on the VPN to remove. If that VPN is connecting, you need to press the Disconnect button to disconnect first.

3. Click the down arrow next to the word Connect and then click Remove to remove the VPN.
