How to Fix The device is unreachable: error 0x80070141

While trying to copy photos and videos from an iOS device to the computer, some Windows users may encounter an Error 0x80070141: The device is unreachable error message. In this scenario, users cannot transfer files from their USB or mobile device to the computer.

An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070141: The device is unreachable.

Fix 1: Use A Different USB cable

Sometimes, a USB port incompatibility can lead to error 0x80070141 and prevent you from transferring pictures or videos. In this case, you just need to try changing your USB cable.

For example, if you are using an older device, it might not be compatible with the USB 3.0 cable. And you should replace the USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 cable that is compatible with most devices.

Fix 2. Reconnect with a different USB port

As some affected users have reported, this particular issue may also occur in instances where the user tries to copy files from external devices with an unstable connection. One of the most likely causes for this problem is the situation in which one of the two ports is not connected properly.

It is also possible that you connected the device to a partially working USB port that does not have enough power to support the current task.

Some users that we also encountered error 0x80070141 reported that they tried to fix the problem by disconnecting the device from the USB port and connecting the device to a different port.

NOTE: If you are trying to copy files from an older device (like a traditional camera), try connecting that device to USB 2.0 instead of 3.0, as the problem can also occur because the device is not there. Required driver works on USB 3.0 connection.

Fix 3. Rename files or directories

According to users, they encountered this error when trying to access the file using the Caliber app. It seems that the problem is a long file path and you can fix it by changing the file path or renaming the file you are trying to access.

Windows has a certain limit on the file path length, and if you exceed this limit you'll get this error and many other errors.

Fix 4. Run hardware and device troubleshooter

This solution requires you to run the Hardware and Device troubleshooter, see if it works or not. You can do this by running a simple command line in the Command Prompt with admin privileges. 

1. Open the Command Prompt by clicking Start and then typing cmd into the search box, then click Run as Administrator.

2. In the Command Prompt window, enter the following code and press Enter to run:

msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic

3. On the next page, click the Next button and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Fix 5. Choose to Connect as Media Device
To transfer files between your mobile phone and computer, 2 USB computer connections are available: Media Device (MTP) and Camera (PTP). However, there is a message that error 0x80070141 can occur if Camera (PTP) is selected.
Why is this happening?
PTP is designed for downloading photos from digital cameras, while MTP is its extension and supports a wider variety of file types and source devices. So, if you are prompted that the device cannot connect when you are using PTP, do not hesitate to try to connect your device as a Media device.

Fix 6. Reinstall your device

According to users, this error occurs when trying to transfer files from iPhone to Windows 10. To solve this, users are suggesting to reinstall your device. 

Make sure your phone is connected to your PC.

1. Press Windows Key+ X and select Device Manager from the menu.

2. When Device Manager opens, click Scan for hardware changes. You may have to repeat this step a few times before your iPhone gets listed in Device Manager. Alternatively, you may want to try uninstalling your iPhone from Device Manager and scanning for hardware changes.

3. Optional: Make sure that iTunes is updated to the latest version.

4. Reboot your PC and reconnect your phone.

5. Make sure to make this PC a trusted device after you connect your phone.

Now you should be able to transfer files without any problems. If this error reappears, you can try reconnecting your iPhone to your PC.

If that didn't work, you should try this solution again. As you can see, this is a temporary solution, so you may have to repeat it if the error occurs again.
