How to Stop Automatic Updates on Windows 11

Microsoft regularly releases updates to patch bugs for its operating system as well as its products and services. Windows 11 is also not an exception to this policy, so it will be regularly updated with patches.

B. Disable Automatic Windows 11 Updates Using Update Services
You can stop Windows 11 automatic updates permanently by disabling the Windows Update service. It is a Windows component responsible for checking for and downloading new updates as they become available.

1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog. Type services.msc and click OK to open the Service Manager.

2. In the Services window, locate the Windows Update service. Right-click on the service and select Properties.

3. Click the drop-down for Startup type, and select Disabled.

4. Click OK and Apply to save the changes. Restart your PC to complete the changes, and that should disable automatic updates on Windows 11.

C. Disable Windows 11 Automatic Updates via Group Policy Editor

Before doing this, you need to note that Windows 11 Home will not have a Group Policy Editor. Therefore, this guide is not intended for Windows 11 Home users.

1. Press Win + R to open Run then type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open Group Policy Editor.

2. You find the folder path Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components then switch to the right box to find the Windows Update item.

3. You open the Windows Update folder then search and double-click Configure Automatic Updates and then select Disabled to disable Windows Update. After selecting, click Apply and OK to confirm.

D. Stop Windows 11 Automatic Updates Using Registry Editor

You can tweak many system settings and store configurations using the Registry Editor. It can also help you block automatic updates for Windows 11.

Note: that making incorrect modifications to your registry entries can render your system useless. Make sure to create a restore point before making any changes to your computer.

1. Press Windows Keys + S to open the Windows Search bar. Type registry editor and open it from the search results.

2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

3. Right-click the Windows (folder) key, select the New submenu, and choose the Key option.

4. Rename the key as WindowsUpdate.

5. Right-click the newly created key, select the New submenu, and choose the Key option

6. Rename it as AU.

7. To do this, right-click on the AU key and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

8. Rename the value as NoAutoUpdate.

9. Double-click on the NoAutoUpdate value. Enter 1 in the Value data field. Click OK to save the changes.

10. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to apply the changes.

E. Disable Windows 11 Update with Third-party Tool
